Freediving

Ashleigh Baird, saved by freediving

Gracefully gliding through the ocean depths is one of the most enthralling activities. The sparkle of sunlight through the water, the darting fish and swaying corals and weeds can feel so otherworldly. But it's the darkness that some people seek.

The furthest I've gone into the depths was 75m, and that was amazing, as the light slowly ebbed away and the quite calm of the deeper ocean took over. But the decompression stops were not fun and I got a bit narked. To do that on a single breath, man, that sends a tingle down the spine.

The current freediving world record is 214 meters (702 feet), now that is something to ponder. But if you're chasing, or perhaps fleeing your own demons, maybe that does not sound all that bad.
